Academic Morning Tea

QUT Golden Key’s first Academic event for 2013 was held on Monday, April 8 in the OJW room at Gardens Point. This was an amazing event. Those lucky enough to attend were graced with the presence of several heads of schools. A brief shower did not dampen spirits for staff and students who had a chance to network and talk about the year ahead.

Freshly brewed tea and coffee was served with jam & cream scones, and fresh fruit (which didn’t last long!). Thank you for all the hard work that went into the event and to everyone that came along – there are definitely some positive results coming out of this event, a surprise for later on this year!

Corporate Wine and Cheese Appreciation Night

QUT Golden Key’s first corporate event for the year, the Corporate Wine and Cheese Appreciation Night, was a great success! Students and corporate representatives were chatting together with ease, discussing study and the workplace with enthusiasm. After talking to a varied range of students, from science to creative industries, I had a lengthy discussion with a few law and business corporate representatives. It was fascinating to hear about the ‘real world’ and to meet kind and encouraging mentors.

After delicious nibbles and a well-appreciated bar tab, it was time for our esteemed guest, the Honourable Justice Ian Callinan AC (former Justice of the High Court of Australia), to speak. It was refreshing to hear him strongly advocate immersing yourself in literature, particularly as a law student. He mentioned that his interest in the creative field, as a writer, had an interesting and beneficial influence on his career. It inspired me to go home and pick up a book!

Overall, the event was stimulating and educational. Meeting corporate representatives and students from a diverse range of faculties was a welcome and enjoyable eye-opener to the professional world.

President's Address 2013

Welcome to QUT Golden Key for 2013!

My name is Rosie Attwell and I am this year's President for the QUT Chapter. I joined Golden Key in 2010 and initially used it as an advertisement on my resume. After researching it online, I discovered that our Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce and Olympic Gold Medallist Ian Thorpe are honorary members. After that, I decided to become more involved!

Rosie Attwell

Over the last three years, I have had amazing and varied opportunities, including:
  • Meeting Tony Jones from Q&A on ABC
  • Receiving a scholarship to travel to the USA and attend the 2012 International Golden Key Conference
  • Volunteering and raising money for charity organisations (such as the Umoja Orphanage)
  • Attending career development workshops lead by industry professionals (like the renowned search consultant Curtis Walter)
  • Meeting other well-rounded, like-minded and pro-active students at QUT

I hope that all of our current members take advantage of what the Golden Key offers. This year we have many social, professional development and community service events planned to ensure you get the most out of your Golden Key membership.

I look forward to meeting you all at some of our events throughout the year!

Asia-Pacific Conference 2013 Review

The Golden Key Asia Pacific Conference was held at the University of South Australia (Adelaide) from Feb 7th - 9th. The theme for the conference was 'get connected'.

Two of our members attended the AP Conference. Our President, Rosie Attwell, attended a seminar and speech by philanthropist, author and speaker Sam Cawthorn. Our 2012 Treasurer, Jodie Lee, thoroughly enjoyed a speech by Rachel Robertson, who lead the 58th ANARY expedition to Antarctica in 2005.

In October 2006, Sam Cawthorn was in a car accident and pronounced dead at the scene, with no signs of pulse or breathing. He suffered a shattered right leg, two collapsed lungs, a lacerated liver, and a right arm so badly injured it was amputated below the elbow. Rather than dwelling on this misfortune, Sam focused his attention toward raising awareness of the traumatic consequences of road accidents on the victim and their families. Sam discusses the concept of “bouncing forward” (rather than “bouncing backward”) from problems. He embraces crises by turning them into opportunities, and encourages a positive outlook on life no matter what.

“He was an incredible speaker and I think everyone in attendance walked out of the room feeling inspired and empowered,” Rosie said, “if I could take one thing away from that conference it was Sam’s phrase: “It is your decision, not your condition, that determines who you are.”

For more information about Sam and his philosophy, please take a look at his website: http://www.samcawthorn.com

Rachel Robertson shared her leadership ideals, as well as the highs and lows of spending an entire year in the most remote place on the planet, Antartica. Rachel’s team were there to maintain the Davis station (a permanent base and Australian scientific research station) over the winter. “Antarctica is inaccessible during winter, so once the supply and transport ship leaves, they are totally on their own for a whole year”, Jodie explained. The main focus of the research was climate change and global warming (undertaken by glaciologists, who study the movement of glaciers). “In terms of global warming, glaciology is one of the most important sciences that we have”.

Here are a couple of Rachel’s leadership achievements:

Inspiration. From May to August, her team could not go outside. Although the team was confined indoors, Rachel believed in “finding reasons to celebrate” and keeping everyone inspired. She managed this by setting achievable goals. At the Davis station, the team celebrated 100 days without a power outage and 10 days without the server dropping out.

Teamwork. Rachel discussed Empire Penguins and their means of survival through teamwork. By protecting the group, the individual thrives. Rachel linked this to Golden Key: making decisions that benefit Golden Key ensures the individual chapter will strengthen and thrive.

Our QUT Chapter representatives gained priceless knowledge from the inspiring speakers on hand at the AP Conference.

Stay tuned for updates on conferences in the Asia-Pacific region!

Community Service Update

The great thing about being a Golden Key member is the broad range of opportunities at your disposal. Not only are there some fantastic social and networking events, but also the chance to get involved in community service projects.

Proceeds from 2012 Community Service BBQ went towards Umoja Orphanage

Golden Key has a great relationship with Yeronga State High School, an award-winning multicultural school that needs volunteers to join their “English as a Second Language” program. This is the perfect way to gain some volunteering experience and contribute to a worthwhile and rewarding cause. You will work closely with the students of Yeronga and learn how just a few hours of your time can make such a difference in someone else's life. Send us an email if you want to get involved. You'll need a valid 'blue card' so if you don’t have one and are a current QUT student, we can help organise one for you through QUT.

In other news, keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming Cake Stall fundraiser. On Wednesday, March 27, grab a delicious cupcake, socialise and help us raise money for a good cause; the Smith Family (a children's charity helping disadvantaged Australian children take advantage of their education). Every dollar goes directly to the fund!

Upcoming Event: Wine and Cheese Networking

We all know that everyone is keen to grab that top dog corporate job. But what exactly does the role entail? How do we actually get our foot in the door? How do we get HR to consider our resumes and cover letters? Am I fit for the role?

All these questions and more can be answered by industry experts at our annual Wine and Cheese Networking Evening on Thursday, April 11th. This is definitely an evening not to be missed. There will be a large range of top-tier industry representatives from all sectors, here exclusively for you! Not to mention complimentary hot snacks, jazz music and matched wine and cheese whilst you network away. Stay tuned to find out who our esteemed speaker will be as they'll be someone not to be missed!

Details about the Golden Key Corporate Wine and Cheese event will be provided soon, so be sure to check your emails and RSVP on time. See you there!
